Magnesium

Despite its strategic importance, Europe has no domestic production of primary magnesium. Over 90% of the global supply is concentrated in China, where the extraction method relies on mining dolomite with coal-fired processes.

This approach generates highly toxic waste and releases large volumes of CO₂, making it one of the most environmentally damaging forms of metal production.

Njörður is building Europe’s first primary magnesium production facility in decades, designed from the ground up to eliminate the environmental harm of conventional methods.

By extracting magnesium directly from seawater and powered entirely by Iceland’s clean energy, our process achieves zero emissions and avoids toxic byproducts altogether.

Njörður stands as a sovereign, sustainable and strategically vital supplier of magnesium for Europe’s green industrial future — where essential materials are produced in harmony with nature.

Chlorine

Njörður is establishing Iceland’s first chlorine production facility — a breakthrough with environmental and economic significance.

Today, chlorine imports arrive primarily in the form of derivatives like sodium hypochlorite, which can be up to 85% water. In effect, Iceland that is renowned for the purity and abundance of its water is importing foreign water at significant financial cost and environmental footprint.

This practice of transporting heavy, water-laden chlorine products across long distances not only incurs redundant shipping expenses, but also contributes to Iceland’s indirect carbon footprint.

By producing chlorine domestically, the need to ship water across oceans is eliminated. In doing so, providing more than a chemical — we strengthen national supply chain resilience and reduce environmental impact.
